Cycle
- 7: Sabbath year (Lev. 25:3–7) — land rests, debts are suspended
- 49: 7 × 7 years = 49; land lies fallow
- 50: Jubilee year (Lev. 25:8–54) — release of all debts, restoration of all property, liberation of all bondservants
Meaning in Jones’ Theology
The Jubilee year is the juridical foundation of Universal Reconciliation.
Jones states:
The year of Jubilee will set all men free in the end, whether they were redeemed or not during those years.
Legal Grounds
- All things are God’s property — Gen. 1; Lev. 25:23:
The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is Mine.
- Debt is not eternal — All sin = debt (Lev. 25). All debt is bounded by God’s law.
- Periodic release — Every 50 years: all debts erased, all bondservants freed, regardless of personal repentance.
- Consequence: ultimate Jubilee — At the end of the age, God will proclaim a final Jubilee (Isa. 61:1–2). All people will be released — believers through Christ’s payment now, unbelievers through God’s ultimate Jubilee then.
Scriptural Basis
Leviticus 25:8–10
You shall count off seven weeks of years, seven times seven years, so that the time of the seven weeks of years gives you forty-nine years. Then you shall sound the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month. On the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land. And you shall hallow the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you: you shall return, every one of you, to your property and every one of you to your family.
Leviticus 25:10b
…all debts are forgiven.
Leviticus 25:54
But if he is not redeemed in these ways, he shall go free in the year of jubilee, he and his children with him.
Theology of Debt and Freedom
Jones uses Jubilee as proof that:
- Debt is not eternal — God Himself decreed that debts be annulled every 50 years. This is the norm of God’s legal system.
- Freedom is God’s goal — Jubilee is not negotiable; it is a fixed moment in God’s calendar.
- Belief accelerates liberation — Believers are freed through Christ’s payment (Gal. 5:1); unbelievers must wait for the ultimate Jubilee.
- No eternal torment — Because Jubilee mandatorily releases all debtors (even those not in Christ), eternal damnation cannot exist.
Correlation with Other Disciplines
- Soteriology — Christ as nearest kinsman (go’el), redeemer of debt
- Hamartology — Sin as debt, bounded by God’s juridical system
- Eschatology — Ultimate Jubilee = apokatastasis (restoration of all things, Col. 1:20, 1Cor. 15:28)
- Theology Proper — God’s irrevocable oath (Num. 14:21, Hab. 2:14)
Numerical Significance
- 7 = completion, rest, God’s work
- 49 = 7 × 7 = perfect time concluded
- 50 = new beginning, liberation, resumption
The Jubilee cycle is God’s eternal pattern of debt-forgiveness and liberation, encoded in number.
