sins of the spirit
Definition
Sins of the spirit are a specific category within Watchman Nee’s eightfold classification of Christian failure in The Life That Wins (b8). The human spirit can sin, distinct from flesh and body. Sanctification requires victory in this area.
Usage per author
Watchman Nee / Witness Lee
“Sins of the spirit: pride, jealousy, unbelief, fault-finding, lack of prayer, and an inability to commit oneself to God — all these are sins of the spirit.” (The Life That Wins, p. 9)
“Though some Christians are spiritually victorious, others find themselves defeated in this particular area.” (The Life That Wins, p. 9)
Interpretation: Nee distinguishes between sins of the spirit, the flesh, the mind, the body, and disposition. The Holy Spirit works in the believer’s spirit to overcome these sins.
