BAPTISM AS PROCESS TOWARD ULTIMATE HUMAN DESTINY
Baptism is not primarily an outward rite but an inward transformative process toward spiritual maturity and God’s sonship. The three baptisms together form a complete cycle of renewal:
Water baptism begins the process; Spirit-baptism confirms it; baptism into Christ completes it. These three phases represent extensive spiritual development, with “three” symbolizing biblical completeness (as in Father-Son-Spirit or spirit-soul-body).
The Three Phases of Transformation
Water baptism marks the beginning of repentance—learning to “think differently” and to set the mind on “things above, not earthly things” (Colossians 3:2).
Spirit baptism is the confirmatory work of the exalted Lord, who grants His power for ongoing transformation from “old” to “new” (Acts 1:8, 2 Corinthians 3:18). This is not once-for-all but continuous.
Baptism into Christ completes the process as inward transformation toward spiritual maturity and God’s sonship. This brings:
The mortification of the “old self” and resurrection to “new life” (Romans 6:3-5).
This resurrection to new life is not merely personal spiritual experience but eschatological—it prefigures the ultimate human transformation.
SONSHIP AS ULTIMATE HUMAN DESTINY
The foundation for growth toward ultimate maturity and God’s sonship lies in this threefold baptism (Hebrews 6:1-2, Ephesians 4:15). This sonship is not merely a present spiritual relationship but the ultimate destiny of humanity: formation into the image of Christ.
The emphasis is not on the outward rite of water baptism, but on the inward transformation through the working of the Holy Spirit that forms believers into the image of Christ.
This formative process—from water confession through Spirit baptism to baptism into Christ—provides the structure of maturation toward God’s ultimate destiny for humanity.
PRIMARY MEANING OF BAPTIZO
The Greek word baptizo primarily means “to influence and transform.” This points to baptism as a fundamental working power in the universe—not as ceremonial ritual but as the force that thoroughly influences and transforms something or someone.
Whatever thoroughly influences and transforms something or someone, ‘baptizes’ it. The primary meaning of baptizo is to act upon, influence, and transform.
This transformative working of the Holy Spirit in the believer—moving from water through Spirit toward complete Christ-conformity—is the essence of eschatological fulfillment for humanity.
