1. Archangels — Michael in dispute with the devil over Moses’ body

[Judas tells us that ‘Michael, the archangel, was engaged in dispute with the devil over the body of Moses’ (Jude 9). And where does Moses reappear? Not in a valley, but with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration (Matt.17:3).]

Analytical note: The authors cite Jude 9 to argue that Moses’ death did not end his significance — the archangel Michael actively contended with the devil over his body. The direct link to the transfiguration (Matt.17:3) serves as a narrative argument: the spiritual battle over Moses’ body resulted in his appearance on the mountain. The devil as claimant to the human body is the implicit theological presupposition.

2. Satan/Devil — Adversary of the birth of the “male child”

[‘The great dragon’ stands before ‘the woman in labour’, to devour ‘her child’ (a ‘male being’ who will rule all nations with an iron staff) as soon as it is born (Rev.12:4-5).]

[These events teach us the same lesson: Satan opposes with all his power the birth of ‘a male being’. We see his rage and hatred every time. But every time God intervenes to bring His own to safety.]

Analytical note: The authors read Revelation 12 typologically: the dragon before the labouring woman is a repeating pattern in history (Pharaoh, Herod, Arab armies). The ‘great dragon’ = Satan in his function as systematic persecutor of God’s redemptive plan. The repeating pattern (“every time we see his rage and hatred”) implies a coherent satanology: Satan acts consistently and intentionally against the progress of God’s purpose.

3. Satan/Devil — Fears and hates the birth of sons; wages war against the Lamb

[Satan fears and hates the birth of these sons. Therefore he will, like Pharaoh and Herod, ‘make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will conquer and those who are with Him’ (Rev.17:14).]

Analytical note: The eschatological dimension of spiritual warfare: Satan’s action is not arbitrary but springs from fear and hatred of the sonship-goal. The quotation from Rev.17:14 (“but the Lamb will conquer”) limits Satan’s power teleologically — his war is lost from the outset. The authors directly connect the individual spiritual process (attaining sonship) to the cosmic battle.

4. Spiritual warfare — Historical manifestations of Satan’s wrath

[Both the birth of Moses and that of Jesus were accompanied by dramatic events. In both cases a king attempted to save his earthly throne through mass murder. Pharaoh ordered all newborn Hebrew boys to be drowned in the Nile (Ex.1:22). Herod had all boys under two years of age living in Bethlehem killed.]

[[Arab armies attacked] the newborn nation, with the intention of destroying it completely. And again Israel emerged from the conflict as a miraculous victor.]

Analytical note: The authors employ a threefold historical typology (Pharaoh – Herod – Arab armies) as evidence for the proposition that Satan stands behind political/military violence aimed at destroying God’s redemptive plan. This is a hermeneutical key whereby modern national history (the founding of Israel 1948) is read as part of the cosmic spiritual battle of Revelation 12.

5. Demons — Submission to Christ

[Hence demons threw themselves trembling before Him (Mark 3:11).]

Analytical note: Brief, incidental citation. The authors use the trembling prostration of demons to illustrate Jesus’ authority — no developed demonology. No context of exorcism or possession.

Summary of authorial position (angelology)

Noordzij places angelology in service of their central thesis on “sonship”: Satan is the systematic adversary of God’s plan to bring forth sons. Michael as archangel protects salvation-history (Moses’ body). The dragon of Revelation 12 is not an isolated apocalyptic figure but a pattern that Noordzij reads as continuing through history. Demons are mentioned in passing. No exorcism or possession is treated.
